Vellum Overlay Card with Embossed Floral Design

Create an elegant top-folding card featuring a vellum overlay with heat-embossed floral design. The vellum lifts away to reveal a coloured panel underneath, giving a luxurious layered effect similar to expensive shop-bought cards.

Step by step

1. Take an A4 sheet of vellum and score it at the top so it wraps around the back of your white top-folding note card (7 by 6 inches). ▶ watch 7:15
2. Stamp the lady image from the stamp set onto a white cardstock panel using black ink, positioning her centrally. ▶ watch 8:15
3. Stamp the bouquet design from the set onto the vellum overlay using a sticky ink pad, positioning it in the top corner. ▶ watch 9:00
4. Dust away excess embossing powder with a dusting brush, keeping the work neat and tidy. ▶ watch 15:00
5. Heat-set the embossing powder using a heat gun with a wafting motion rather than holding it in one place, to minimise warping on the vellum. ▶ watch 19:30
6. Turn the vellum over and colour the back side with pencils or markers in areas that complement your design, such as adding red tones to the flowers. ▶ watch 22:00
7. Adhere the coloured vellum overlay to the front of your card using glue dots or tape hidden along the base edge. ▶ watch 27:30
8. Add a black matte cardstock panel at the base to hide the join and weight down the vellum, then stamp the same floral design onto this panel for continuity. ▶ watch 31:00
9. Stamp a sentiment such as 'Thank You' onto white cardstock and adhere it to the card front to complete the design. ▶ watch 36:30
10. Add a decorative black cardstock strip or accent piece to the base of the vellum to finish and stabilise the overlay. ▶ watch 41:45

Tips from the show

• When heat-setting embossing powder on vellum or acetate, use a wafting motion with the heat gun rather than holding it in one place to reduce warping.
• Colour the back of the vellum with pencils or markers to add subtle colour that shows through to the front without obscuring the embossed design.
• Use glue in hidden areas underneath the embossed design to adhere the vellum, keeping the front appearance seamless.
