Wintry Forest Scene Card with Embossed Trees and Dry Brush Technique

A project from our live show CREATE AND CRAFT - LATEST PRODUCTS - Join Carley Duff for her Inspiration using SBM products - Broadcast 13th Aug 22 · 13/08/2022 · watch it from 3:00

Create an atmospheric winter landscape card featuring die-cut deer against a layered forest backdrop. The card uses distress inks for a faded sky effect, stencilled tree silhouettes, and dry brush acrylic paint over an embossed wood grain folder to bring depth and detail to the scene.

Step by step

  1. Create a wintry backdrop by applying distress ink (salty ocean colour) to card stock, fading it into white at the edges using a craft knife to cut tree shapes into stencil film. ▶ watch 3:00
  2. Ink over the stencil film with darker distress ink using a circular motion to create intense tree silhouettes in the background. ▶ watch 3:45
  3. Emboss card stock using an embossing folder with a wood grain or lumber pattern. ▶ watch 4:15
  4. Apply dry brush technique with acrylic paint over the embossed folder, using a dry brush with no water to highlight the embossed details. ▶ watch 5:45
  5. Add lighter colour dry brushing to bring out the wood grain detail of the embossed texture. ▶ watch 6:30
  6. Add a tiny touch of green acrylic paint to suggest moss on areas of the tree. ▶ watch 7:30
  7. Cut embossed card into thin strips to create foreground trees, matching the width of the background tree stencils. ▶ watch 8:00
  8. Glue the tree strips onto the card using express glue to create a layered forest effect. ▶ watch 8:30
  9. Tear card stock to the same size as your base card and layer it as a foreground using foam tape for dimension. ▶ watch 9:45
  10. Fold a piece of card around the back of die-cut deer and run through the machine again to flatten the back edge for a better finish. ▶ watch 10:15
  11. Add shadow to the feet of the deer using stencil film to create straight lines, measuring from where the sun would be. ▶ watch 11:30
  12. Spray the card lightly with water and dab away some ink to create out-of-focus snowflakes falling down. ▶ watch 12:00
