Watercolour Layered Background with Stamped Words

A project from our live show CREATE TOGETHER CLUB - Join Toni for her latest CTC show - Broadcast 13th June 22 · 13/06/2022 · watch it from 6:30

Create a textured, ethereal background using watercolour card and stamped sentiments. By layering waterproof ink with water splashes and glazing techniques in coordinating colours, you build depth and visual interest without a flat wash effect.

Step by step

  1. Cut a piece of watercolour card to your desired card size. ▶ watch 6:30
  2. Ink up the sentiment stamp with Versafine (waterproof) ink and stamp it onto the card. ▶ watch 8:15
  3. While the ink is still wet, splat water onto the stamped area with a brush to make the ink bleed and create texture. ▶ watch 9:45
  4. Stamp the same sentiment again in a different area of the card, overlapping slightly if desired. ▶ watch 10:30
  5. Add more water splashes to create bleeding effects across the card. ▶ watch 11:45
  6. Dry the card completely. ▶ watch 12:45
  7. Mix your first chosen colour (e.g. teal) with water on a glass mat to create a puddle. ▶ watch 14:30
  8. Splat the diluted colour onto the card in focused areas using a brush. ▶ watch 15:00
  9. Dry the card again between colour layers. ▶ watch 17:45
  10. Apply a second colour by dipping the card into a puddle of ink on your mat (smooch technique) rather than applying ink to the card. ▶ watch 19:00
  11. Dry again, then apply a third colour using the carrier sheet to pick up ink and press onto the card for varied texture. ▶ watch 20:30
