Masking Fluid Watercolour Snow and Silhouette Card

A project from our live show ANYTHING GOES - Join Toni in her Wednesday show where basically YOU decide what happens next.....Broadcast 11th May 22 · 11/05/2022 · watch it from 7:15

A watercolour card featuring a silhouette landscape with snow effects created using masking fluid. The masking fluid protects areas of the card whilst you paint, then rubs away to reveal white highlights that look like falling snow or frost on trees.

Step by step

  1. Shake the masking fluid bottle well and apply dots randomly across your cardstock using the precision nib applicator to create snow effect areas. ▶ watch 7:30
  2. Allow the masking fluid to dry completely; it will change from white to a creamy colour as it dries (takes approximately two minutes). ▶ watch 8:45
  3. Prepare your watercolour fan pan and wet your flat brush with water. ▶ watch 14:00
  4. Apply watercolour paint across the entire card in sweeping motions, creating a sunset or aurora sky effect; do not worry about the appearance at this stage. ▶ watch 28:15
  5. Build up colour with multiple layers, adding reds, oranges, and other hues to create depth and mood in your sky. ▶ watch 29:45
  6. Allow the watercolour to dry completely before proceeding. ▶ watch 31:00
  7. Using a small watercolour brush and black paint, paint a silhouette landscape (trees, hills, or other scenery) across the lower portion of the card. ▶ watch 32:30
  8. Add black splatter details and accents to enhance the composition. ▶ watch 36:45
  9. Once the paint is completely dry, gently rub away the masking fluid with your finger to reveal the white snow effects underneath. ▶ watch 38:45
  10. Add highlights using a white gel pen around the silhouette details and edges to enhance the design. ▶ watch 41:15
  11. Mount the finished artwork onto a card base and add a sentiment or embellishment as desired. ▶ watch 44:00
