Vintage Heliotrope Watercolour Card with Layered Die-Cut Flower

A project from our live show CREATE AND CRAFT LIVE - Join Helen Kirkham - broadcast 14th April · 14/04/2022 · watch it from 17:15

A beautiful vintage-style card featuring a hand-coloured heliotrope flower stamped with watercolour inks, layered with torn-edge die-cut elements, and finished with twine and embellishments. The soft, aged aesthetic is created by using grey ink over coloured layers and adding mixed media elements like corrugated card.

Step by step

  1. Place watercolour card onto your stamping surface and prepare dye inks in pink and purple shades. ▶ watch 17:15
  2. Spritz the heliotrope stamp lightly with water to allow the colours to blend and move on the card. ▶ watch 17:30
  3. Stamp the coloured heliotrope onto the watercolour card, pressing gently without excessive pressure. ▶ watch 17:45
  4. Dab away some of the excess moisture with tissue to control the colour bleed. ▶ watch 18:00
  5. Re-ink the stamp with grey ink and stamp again over the same image to add vintage pencil-drawn detail. ▶ watch 18:15
  6. Send the stamped card through your die-cutting machine twice to cut out the heliotrope using the matching die. ▶ watch 18:30
  7. Layer the die-cut flower onto darker card with the torn-edge die to create dimension and contrast. ▶ watch 20:30
  8. Add foam pads behind the flower layers to lift them away from the backing card. ▶ watch 21:00
  9. Wrap twine around the card and secure at the back with glue. ▶ watch 21:30
  10. Glue a wooden scrabble tile or embellishment to the front using foam pads for extra dimension. ▶ watch 22:00
