Heat-Embossed Vellum Tag with Painted Florals

An elegant tag featuring heat-embossed florals on vellum with hand-painted watercolour details and layered die-cut elements. The design showcases how vellum can be transformed with embossing and painting techniques to create delicate, dimensional pieces.

Step by step

1. Place vellum onto your work surface and stamp a large floral image using VersaMark ink. ▶ watch 38:00
2. Sprinkle white embossing powder over the stamped image and tap off excess powder. ▶ watch 38:15
3. Heat the embossed vellum using a heat tool set to high temperature, holding it briefly to melt the powder and create a raised, glossy finish. ▶ watch 40:30
4. Spritz water onto the embossed vellum surface using a spray bottle, then paint over the embossed design with watercolour inks using a brush. ▶ watch 41:00
5. Add a second ink colour to the wet vellum, allowing colours to blend and bleed around the embossed lines. ▶ watch 42:30
6. Dry the painted vellum using a heat tool held at a distance to avoid reactivating the embossing powder. ▶ watch 43:00
7. Fussy-cut individual floral elements from the painted vellum sheet using small scissors. ▶ watch 44:00
8. Create a tag shape using a tag maker tool and trim to size with a paper trimmer. ▶ watch 50:30
9. Stamp a sentiment onto the tag using black ink. ▶ watch 51:30
10. Attach twine to the tag for hanging. ▶ watch 52:00
11. Glue the fussy-cut vellum florals onto the tag, positioning them to create a layered, dimensional arrangement. ▶ watch 53:00
12. Add leaves and additional embellishments to frame the focal flowers and complete the design. ▶ watch 54:30

Tips from the show

• Vellum is an underused material that works beautifully with heat embossing and watercolour painting techniques.
• White embossing powder traps water droplets when watercolouring, creating a lovely framing effect around the embossed lines.
• You can use alcohol markers instead of watercolour inks on vellum, and you can create splatters with alcohol markers as well.
