Crab Beach Scene Shimmer Card

A charming seaside card featuring a cute crab with wobbly eyes in a layered beach scene. The design uses iridescent spray to create a shimmering background, with layered die-cuts representing sand, seaweed, and sea, topped with a sentiment strip and raised character.

Step by step

1. Place a card blank into a box lid lined with absorbent paper to catch spray overspray. ▶ watch 26:45
2. Shake the iridescent spray bottles to activate the mica, then spray the bubble wave stencil onto the card with orange and rose pastel colours. ▶ watch 27:00
3. Carefully lift off the stencil to reveal the shimmering background pattern. ▶ watch 28:00
4. Dry the sprayed card with a heat gun to set the colours and help straighten any curling. ▶ watch 28:15
5. Apply tape runner adhesive to a black card mount and attach it to a red card blank. ▶ watch 29:30
6. Adhere the shimmered background card to the black mount using tape runner. ▶ watch 30:00
7. Cut a white card panel to size and layer blue card, sand-coloured card, and seaweed foliage die-cuts to create a beach scene. ▶ watch 31:00
8. Stamp the shallow sentiment repeatedly across a white strip using black ink, positioning stamps in a line with some overlapping the edge. ▶ watch 31:45
9. Glue the sentiment strip onto the beach scene panel. ▶ watch 33:30
10. Trim the layered beach scene to size and mount it on a black card backing. ▶ watch 34:15
11. Stamp the crab image onto white card and colour it with watercolours, mixing orange and red for the shell and adding details to the legs and mouth. ▶ watch 37:15
12. Die-cut the coloured crab using the appropriate die. ▶ watch 40:45
13. Glue wobbly eyes onto the crab to bring it to life. ▶ watch 42:15
14. Mount the crab on a foam pad and position it on the beach scene, then attach the whole scene to the card base. ▶ watch 42:45

Tips from the show

• You can mask off areas with masking tape before spraying if you want to control where the shimmer goes.
• Use sizes 4 and 1 watercolour brushes mainly—size 4 for washing colour over the character and size 1 for adding darker details and enhancement.
• Wobbly eyes add character and fun to your designs and come in many different sizes.
