Inked Background with Stamped Centre and Doodle Frame Card

Build a modern, textured card by creating a multi-coloured inked background using an acrylic block and spray bottle, adding a hand-drawn doodle frame, stamping a large image in the centre, then cutting the finished piece in half to create two coordinating slimline cards.

Step by step

1. Gather several IZINK dye-based ink pads in various colours such as purple, blue, and other shades from your collection. ▶ watch 30:45
2. Place an acrylic block on your work surface and apply ink from the first colour pad directly onto the block. ▶ watch 31:00
3. Spray the inked acrylic block lightly with a spray bottle to add moisture and create texture. ▶ watch 31:15
4. Press a piece of white cardstock firmly onto the inked block, then lift away to reveal the coloured, textured impression. ▶ watch 31:30
5. Repeat the process with different colour combinations, stamping the acrylic block multiple times onto the same cardstock to build up a multi-coloured background. ▶ watch 32:00
6. Spray water directly onto the inked cardstock to create additional texture and allow colours to blend slightly. ▶ watch 33:15
7. Allow the cardstock to dry completely. ▶ watch 34:30
8. Using a fine-liner pen or doodle pen, draw a decorative wiggly frame around the edges of the cardstock, looking ahead to where you want the line to go rather than watching the pen. ▶ watch 36:00
9. Add a second inner frame line and fill any awkward areas with doodles, stitching effects, or additional decorative marks. ▶ watch 36:45
10. Stamp the large 'Note to Say' stamp in the centre of the cardstock using black ink. ▶ watch 37:30
11. Measure the width of the finished piece and cut it exactly in half using a guillotine to create two slimline-format cards. ▶ watch 39:00
12. Mount each slimline piece onto a coordinating card base and add a sentiment at the bottom. ▶ watch 40:00

Tips from the show

• Don't worry about getting the ink placement perfectly straight on the acrylic block—the random, organic effect is part of the design.
• You can create two cards from one background panel by cutting it in half, making this technique very efficient.
• If you're not happy with the finished design, you can cut it up and repurpose the pieces rather than discarding them.
