A dynamic journal page combining torn vellum and patterned papers with stencilled backgrounds and stamped elements. The design builds up layers of colour and texture to create a visually rich, artistic composition.

You will need

Step by step

1. Apply a stencil to your journal page using ink to create a background pattern. ▶ watch 39:45
2. Tear up sheets of vellum and patterned paper into irregular pieces. ▶ watch 40:00
3. Layer the torn vellum and paper pieces onto the stencilled background, arranging them to break up the page. ▶ watch 40:15
4. Ink around the edges of some torn pieces to add definition and depth. ▶ watch 40:30
5. Stamp the eye stamp onto the page using your chosen ink colour. ▶ watch 41:00
6. Add additional colour using watercolours or ink pads to tie the composition together. ▶ watch 41:30
7. Stamp the heart stamp onto coordinating paper or directly onto the page. ▶ watch 42:00
8. Continue layering and building up the collage until you are satisfied with the composition. ▶ watch 42:30

Tips from the show

• You don't have to rip up entire sheets; scraps and offcuts work perfectly well.
• Vellum remains see-through, so layering it over stencils creates interesting visual effects.
• There is no right or wrong way to arrange collage elements; just have a go and see what works.
