Explosion Book with Pockets

Make an interactive explosion-style book from a single 12 by 12 sheet of patterned paper. This project creates multiple fold-out panels that can hold cards, vellum, or embellishments, with optional pockets for storing small items.

Step by step

1. Score a 12 by 12 sheet of paper at four inches ▶ watch 51:30
2. Score again at eight inches to divide the paper into thirds ▶ watch 51:45
3. Rotate the paper 90 degrees ▶ watch 52:00
4. Score at four inches on the rotated paper ▶ watch 52:15
5. Score at eight inches on the rotated paper to create nine equal sections ▶ watch 52:30
6. Cut from the edge to the first score line on alternating sections ▶ watch 52:45
7. Fold the cut sections back and forth to create the explosion effect ▶ watch 53:00
8. Fold corners back to create flaps for holding items ▶ watch 53:30
9. Apply adhesive to edges only to create open pockets for inserting cards or embellishments ▶ watch 54:00

Tips from the show

• There is no right or wrong way to fold the explosion book; you can fold sections in different directions
• Use double-sided patterned paper to show different designs on each side
• You can add vellum, cards, or other embellishments into the pockets created by the folds
