Splashy Watercolour Background with Ink Pads and Detail Stamp

A vibrant, artistic background created by splashing and splatting ink pad colours onto watercolour paper, then layering a detailed stamp on top. This technique creates a dynamic, modern look that appears complex but is actually very achievable.

Step by step

1. Apply pink and blue ink pad colours to watercolour paper using daubers or sponges, creating splashes and splatters. ▶ watch 54:30
2. Allow the colours to blend and merge naturally on the paper, creating an organic, artistic background. ▶ watch 55:00
3. Once dry, stamp a detailed image (such as a portrait or figure) on top of the splashy background using black or dark ink. ▶ watch 55:15
4. The detail stamp will stand out crisply against the coloured background, creating contrast and visual interest. ▶ watch 55:45
5. Add any additional details or sentiments as desired to complete the card. ▶ watch 56:00

Tips from the show

• You can continue adding splashes and layers to build up the background as much as you like.
• Using watercolour paper helps the inks blend beautifully and prevents the paper from buckling.
