Stag in Forest Stencilled Christmas Card

Create a layered Christmas card featuring a stag silhouette with forest trees created using stencils and mixed media techniques. The design uses stamped sentiment text as texture within the stag outline, layered over patterned bird paper, and finished with coordinating card blanks and envelopes.

Step by step

1. Gather your green card blank, pink cardstock, and patterned paper with bird design from the Cotton Pines collection. ▶ watch 12:30
2. Place the stencil mask down on your green card to protect the stag outline. ▶ watch 13:00
3. Stamp tree designs along the base of the card using brown distress ink, positioning them to create a forest line. ▶ watch 13:45
4. Reposition the stag stencil and stamp the stag outline using brown ink, pressing firmly around the entire body. ▶ watch 16:00
5. Add darker brown shading to the stag using aged mahogany ink, building up colour gradually for dimension. ▶ watch 17:00
6. Stamp sentiment text from the collection inside the stag outline using light-coloured ink to create textured detail. ▶ watch 26:00
7. Stamp the same sentiment text around the exterior of the stag in green ink to extend the mixed media effect. ▶ watch 28:45
8. Trim and layer your stamped sentiment piece onto pink cardstock, then edge with black ink pad to frame it. ▶ watch 32:00
9. Adhere the pink layer to the patterned bird paper, positioning it to complement the stag design. ▶ watch 36:00
10. Mount the complete design onto your green card blank and place in the coordinating teal envelope. ▶ watch 37:00

Tips from the show

• Use the inner and outer stencil pieces together to give yourself more scope and flexibility in your design.
• Stamp sentiment text as texture both inside and outside your main image to create depth and mixed media interest.
• Don't aim for perfect placement; a suggestion of trees and texture works better than a completely symmetrical design.
