3D Vellum Layered Heart Card

Create an elegant card featuring layered vellum hearts that fold and nest together to form a 3D butterfly-like effect. The hearts pop up beautifully when the card is opened, creating a delicate and sophisticated look.

Step by step

1. Cut three sizes of hearts from white card: large, medium and small. ▶ watch 4:45
2. Fold vellum in half and die-cut large hat shapes through both layers to get two pieces from one cut. ▶ watch 5:00
3. Score the large white card heart down the centre using a scoring tool. ▶ watch 6:30
4. Fold the vellum hat pieces in half yourself to avoid cutting through the delicate material. ▶ watch 7:00
5. Apply glue down the centre of the white card heart and let it become tacky before adhering. ▶ watch 9:00
6. Nest the vellum hat pieces inside each other and glue them to the centre of the white heart. ▶ watch 9:15
7. Use an acrylic block to gently flatten the layers whilst keeping the 3D effect. ▶ watch 12:00
8. Repeat the process with medium and small hearts, varying the arrangement of vellum pieces. ▶ watch 12:15

Tips from the show

• Let vellum glue become tacky before sticking to prevent it from absorbing all the adhesive.
• The 3D hearts will flatten completely for posting in an envelope but pop back up when the card is opened.
• You can tie the vellum pieces together with cotton for a different look instead of using glue.
